As independent and customer-oriented research organisation, VITO provides innovative (bio)technological solutions as well as scientifically based advice and support in order to stimulate sustainable development and reinforce the economic and social fabric of Flanders.
In its 20 years of existence, VITO has achieved the status of being a key player in the European world of research and development. In the research domains of dleantech, environment, energy, materials and remote sensing, VITO's strength has been its pursuit of applied and practical research and development which is relevant for industry and public authorities.
VITO expresses its 'vision on technology' through the advice given to clients on technological developments. As well as in the way in which the VITO experts develop new technology and support companies with their innovation. This 'vision on technology' guarantees a continuous growth of VITO and its partners and creates strong dynamics in VITO. These dynamics are reflected in the modern valorisation policy of VITO, which recently resulted into the establishment of several spin-offs.

VITO launched recently with the chemical industry federation essenscia the Flemish Initiative for Sustainable Chemistry (FISCH). Via this program and its cleantech initative (Flanders Cleantech Association) one of the key topics at VITO are biomass and biotechnology related research. VITO pays attention to the whole value chain of biomass up to food/feed – materials/chemicals – energy (cascade approach). Research goes to biomass availability, analytics and technology. The cleantech approach brings VITO to work on the integration of conversion and separation processes. We can name in situ product recovery, enzyme bioreactors, biomass harvesting and fractionation, microbial electrochemical systems, membrane separation, combination with chemical processes etc. The process intensification of integrated downstream processes is the final objective to support sustainable and competitive biorefeneries for the future.
